Perhaps we're a little biased but we think the Cerato is a strikingly good looking car. From its crescent shaped roofline that gives Cerato its sleek lines and its occupants such space, to the 'white-pointer' style nose and stylish rear, the Cerato exudes an air of understated confidence. But, as they say, style is nothing without substance. And substance is one thing Cerato has in abundance. From the moment you steer it out of the dealership you'll appreciate that its confident looks are matched with equally confident road manners. A rigid chassis, MacPherson strut front suspension and dual link rear suspension combine to give it highly predictable handling and an extremely smooth ride. While a cleverly curved floor panel adds to this sense of smoothness by reducing noise and vibration.
Slide inside Cerato and youll notice two things immediately. The first, a serene and hushed atmosphere with the kind of prestige feel youd expect in a car costing many thousands of dollars more. The second, a level of space which belies the cars compact external dimensions. Everyone travels well in Cerato. Aside from generous head, leg and knee room for up to five, theres an adjustable headrest and a 3-point seatbelt for each as well. There are thoughtful centre armrests front and rear, both incorporating convenient storage compartments; and rear passengers have elegant net-style map pockets to secure reading materials on long journeys. The driver enjoys the ease of having all critical controls in close reach, with the standard cruise control being literally a fingertip away on the back of the tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Air-conditioning keeps everyone comfortable and is whisper-quiet, so youll hear every note from the six speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3-compatible sound system. The rear seats have a 60:40 split-fold function to enable extensions to the already large luggage compartments.
The Kia Cerato offers plenty of power. At the same time, clever thinking makes it more efficient and therefore highly economical. The impressively smooth 2.0 litre, 105kW engine employs double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and 16-valves to enhance engine efficiency. CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) technology automatically adjusts the duration of valve openings to deliver the most appropriate mix of power and torque across different engine speeds and road situations. The result is greater flexibility, fewer gear changes and more immediate response to the accelerator at all times. From city traffic to Australias open roads, the five-speed manual transmission or the optional Tiptronic-style automatic ensures a smart transfer of power to the wheels; and the latest techniques in NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) minimisation ensure the Cerato is relaxing and refined on the road.
The three aspects fundamental to a cars quality reliability, durability and safety must be central to the cars original design, and incorporated from the earliest stages of construction. Critical sections of Ceratos body shell which is built around an integral passenger safety cage are put through a specialised preparation process to safeguard against corrosion. After the body is carefully primed, a multi-stage system then applies the paint layers which imbue it with both its good looks and its own force-field against the elements. Finally, cavities are treated to protect against the effects of moisture and to maximise the life of the car. Its this dedication to the detail which results in a tangible sense of integrity shining through in a multitude of different wayssome obvious, others more subtle. Feel the reassuring sense of solidity when you close the drivers door on a Cerato and youll know what we mean.
With the benefit of learnings gathered over many years of relentless testing at Kias Research & Development facilities in Germany, the U.S.A and other locations around the world, the integrity of Ceratos structure delivers significant benefits in the form of advanced passive crash safety. The safety cell is shielded from impacts by front and rear crumple zones, which utilise carefully blended grades of steel to allow a process of programmed deformation in which the body shell absorbs crash energy and dissipates it away underneath the floor. Complementing this structural framework are seatbelt pre-tensioners, which tighten the front seatbelts in the event of a collision to ensure the wearers are optimally restrained milliseconds before the dual front SRS airbags are deployed.
Helping you to avoid an accident in the first place are Ceratos active safety measures: powerful four wheel disc brakes, coupled with a finely-tuned suspension set-up utilising MacPherson struts at the front and a dual-link rear, provide superb poise and predictability in all conditions. ABS anti-lock brakes, available as an option on both Cerato versions, help the driver to avoid a scenario in which the car skids out of control in an emergency braking manoeuvre by automatically adjusting the amount of brake pressure being applied. ABS brings with it Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), which maintains the cars poise in a sudden stop by balancing the braking effect between the front and rear wheels.
Cerato's packed with features to make driving a pleasure. Little things make a big difference, especially when they come as standard. For a car whose exterior is designed to take advantage of narrow city streets and tight parking spots, the Cerato's interior is exceptionally spacious and the level of appointment is superb. There is cruise control for starters with controls conveniently mounted on the steering wheel. So you can set your preferred speed and rest easy knowing that Cerato won't have you breaking any speed limits on the freeway. Power steering, windows and mirrors (both of which are heated for quick demisting on winter mornings) are also standard. Then there's remote central locking, air conditioning and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel to ensure you find the perfect driving position.
The Cerato also sets new standards in the small car category for NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) so it's blissfully quiet on the road. Until, of course, you turn on the superb six-speaker CD sound system. A split folding rear seat is also standard as is an exceptionally hungry 345 litre capacity boot.
The Cerato gives you a lot more car for a lot less money and there's also world class levels of safety. A two litre engine with double overhead camshafts provides the Cerato with excellent performance and superb fuel economy. The standard five-speed manual transmission ensures precise gear changes while an exceptionally smooth four-speed automatic transmission is available as an option.
Cerato also performs brilliantly in an emergency. Dual front airbags are standard as are seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters which ensure optimum occupant restraint under heavy braking or in the event of a collision. Four-wheel disc brakes pull the Cerato up effortlessly. And, if you wish, you can always opt for Kia's superb Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) to ensure optimal braking performance.
